History of Swing Dancing
Swing is a very energetic and unique dance. It can be simple or complex, but you can be assured it's always fun. There are many different styles or versions of it, each with distinct characteristics. As its name implies, it is known for its swings, lifts and spins that can sometimes be quite complicated. It's a quick dance that requires a considerable degree of physical fitness. In this article we'll take a quick look at its history.
The history of swing begins with the history of Lindy hop. Lindy hop originated in the late 1920s in New York and reached huge popularity in the 30s and 40s. It has its roots in the Charleston and Foxtrot and was danced to what was at a time called jazz music. Jazz music was also known as swing music and the dances danced to it became known as swing dances. Lindy hop got its name after Charles Lindbergh, the famous aviator. It is still danced today.
Savoy Swing: a style of Swing popular in the New York Savoy Ballroom in the 30's and 40's originally danced to Swing music. The Savoy style of swing is a very fast, jumpy, casual-looking style of dancing
Lindy style is a smoother-looking dance.
West Coast Swing: a style of Swing emphasizing nimble feet popular in California night clubs in the 30's and 40's and voted the California State Dance in 1989.
Whip: a style of Swing popular in Houston, Texas, emphasizing moves spinning the follower between dance positions with a wave rhythm break.
Push: a style of swing popular in Dallas, Texas, emphasizing moves spinning the follower between dance positions with a rock rhythm break.
Supreme Swing: a style of Swing popular in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Imperial Swing: a style of Swing popular in St. Louis, Missouri.
Carolina Shag: a style of Swing popular in the Carolinas emphasizing the leader's nimble feet.

...Silent Dancing – Judith Ortiz Cofer When Cofer says that they were one of the firsts to have a TV in El Building she now realizes that it was because of her father’s decently paying job that they had some finer things than their neighbors did. When her father explains that they should keep to themselves I was confused and then realized that it was so they would not become attached because he had plans for a better place. We all do this at some point. This is my senior year at Central and even though I allowed myself to get close to my roommates I have already started to distance myself by being progressively less present in our pod and in our room. It is easier to say goodbye to something that you do not feel attached to. I feel that by the time I have to say goodbye to my roommates distancing myself will make it less of a ‘change.’ If I start the process now it will hopefully not feel like such a big change. Cofer’s reference to the silent homemade film draws me in when she describes her own experience. “It is both comical and sad to watch silent dancing.” (77) I do this as well; all I could think about is watching some of my own home videos and seeing the facial expressions and the body language of everyone. Volkov’s piece entitled The Dancing Bacha is a drawing of a gathering of males, featuring a dancing boy (the bacha) who often performed in the streets of pre-Soviet Central Asia. The piece was made in 1926 and most likely depicts a traditional teahouse in Uzbekistan. The piece’s present location is the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Although its original location is not noted, it is thought to have originated in Uzbekistan, as previously mentioned. The work is said to be typical of the era, described as Russian Modernism. The artist was born and raised in Uzbekistan, but ethnically Russian and trained in Kiev during the height of European Modernism. The piece is pencil on paper and is approximately five inches by seven inches. It is framed in a large, black frame with a thick, white mat approximately four inches in width. It hangs alone on a narrow section of wall and is well-lit. It can only be viewed on one side due to the frame and position on the wall. The drawing is a monochromatic, gray scale depiction of a group of four males. One, the bacha, is dancing while another, to the right, is playing a stringed instrument called the ghidjak. Dancers must use their bodies to express emotions, tell a story, commit to years of physical training, develop stamina, work as a team, take care of their bodies, stretch to prevent injuries, and enter into competitions against other dancers. They deserve to be helped at the athletic office. The dance education majors are not even allowed to ask for an ice pack from the athletic trainers. Members of the Grand Canyon University Dance Team are considered athletes, while the Dance Education majors are not. Both programs involve dance training but yet the school team is the only one of the two that reaps the benefits of being an athlete. The label of dancing being an art or sport has been questioned for decades now but no one has given it a definitive answer. When looking up the definition for athlete, several interpretations are given; overall, the main idea of an athlete being, “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina” according to the Webster dictionary. When comparing this definition to dancers, it is clear that they meet each of those standards. So, why are dancers being denied help from the athletic training office when they demonstrate comparable abilities in physical training, competition, teamwork, and dedication; just as much as any of the athletic teams......

These influences are presented in family different family members in a black and white movie playing throughout Cofer’s mind of her family’s holiday party. The assimilations were presented through three essential women in Cofer’s life; her mother whom was in middle assimilation, her fully assimilated cousin, and her newly assimilated cousin’s brother’s girlfriend. Cofer’s mother is in the middle phase of her assimilation. Cofer’s mother wanting to stay in El Building, whilst her father yearned to live somewhere else, because she never got over the yearning for la isla “The Island”. Her mother only cooked with foods she could pronounce the names of which were some of the same brands her own mother had used. Cofer’s mother shopping outside of La Bodega going to Sears, Penney’s and Lerner’s, showed a willingness unlike the other women to shop in American stores but still held onto the small comforts that reminded her of her home land. This event is a large gathering of tribesmen where dancing, usually competitive, is performed, along with other festivities. A pow-wow session begins with the Grand Entry and, in most cases, a prayer. Besides those for the opening and closing of a pow-wow session, the most common is the intertribal, where a drum will sing a song and anyone who wants to can come and dance. Similar dances are the round dance; crow hop when performed by a northern drum or a horse stealing song by a southern drum; there is also "double beat", "sneak up" and, for Women's Traditional and Jingle, "sidestep". She is the stabilizing economic and social force holding the family together and therefore takes on the role of maintaining the household. She is dismissive of allowing the Mundy sisters to attend the dance because she realises that it would interfere with her responsibilities.
